There are numerous legends that explains the creation of the lake. Most popular one is that a dragon named Murin upon being mortally wounded by a hero clawed out his own eyes. He threw one eye far away towards todays island of Mljet, but other eye slipped under his feet and melted the stone. The sea poured into the stone hollow and a lake was formed, with the significant name, Dragon's Eye.
