Are pets allowed in holiday villas, and what does “pet-friendly” really mean?
Yes, many villas in Croatia allow you stay with pets. In most cases, this includes dogs and sometimes cats. While looking at villas on VIP Holiday Booker’s website, you’ll see (usually at the end of villa descriptions) if the villa allows pets upon request and whether additional charges may apply.

However, pet-friendly doesn’t mean there are no restrictions or that you can bring your pets without stating that while booking the villa.
The restrictions are placed to help you, your pets, and other guests feel safe and comfortable in a villa.
It protects the property from potential damage and helps you find a villa that’s most suitable for your pet. Also, larger pets may require more space, which impacts cleaning and maintenance.
In the next paragraph, we’ll explain these rules.
Are there extra fees or rules when staying in a pet-friendly villa?
Although pet-friendly means that the villa welcomes pets, rules on the number, size, and breed of dogs (or cats) you’re allowed to bring vary by the villa.
Some pet-friendly villas may charge a one-time pet cleaning fee, while others allow pets at no extra cost. The fee depends on the length of your stay, the number of pets, and sometimes, their size.
There are also local laws, neighborhood rules, and villa insurance policies that your villa managers must follow.
This is why we kindly ask you to inform your VIP Concierge agent in advance if you’re traveling with pets. This helps your villa manager prepare for the number and kind of pets you’re bringing.
Which pet-friendly villas are best for dogs?

Villa Aquamarin on Korcula
When you’re looking for a pet-friendly villa, make sure its amenities are suitable for your dog. If you’re only looking for the “pet-friendly” badge, you may miss some important details.
First, look at the exterior of your villa since most dogs like to run and play outside. Make sure the villa has a spacious, private, and fenced outdoor area. What’s more, look for a villa with a fenced pool since most villas don’t allow dogs in their pools because it’s harder to clean.
You should check the villa interiors, too, because it’s just as important. Aim for a villa with mostly tiled floors. Hardwood and carpets are much harder to clean and more prone to temporary damage.
Make sure the villa is surrounded by walking paths or within walking distance to a dog-friendly park. It’s also a big plus if the villa is close to the dog-friendly beach, or a “hidden” beach. Croatia has many villas just a few meters from the beach and strangers can’t easily reach them by land. Many people have allergies, or they’re simply scared of dogs, so you don’t want to take them to a public beach with lots of young kids or elderly people.
Is Croatia a good place to travel with pets?
Croatia is a perfect place for traveling with your pets, with a high number of pet-friendly villas and accommodations along its coast. You have plenty of properties with private gardens and terraces, and almost all regions have designated dog-friendly beaches.
Furthermore, your pets will love Croatia’s Mediterranean climate. For most of the year, it’s ideal for walks and other outdoor activities thanks to long, sunny days and a fresh sea breeze in the evenings. It’s also perfect for swimming from June to September.
There are many parks and countryside areas where you can take your dogs to experience nature. Pets, especially dogs, are also welcome in most restaurants and coffee bars with outdoor terraces.
Needless to say, it’s very easy for EU travelers to visit Croatia with their pets, especially those traveling by car.
Best parts of Croatia for holidays with pets
Villa Charisma on Brac
Honestly, whichever region you choose, we’re sure you’ll find at least one dog beach and several parks. However, here are some of our favorite places for villa holidays with pets in Croatia.
Istria and Kvarner are very popular for holidays with pets, especially considering the fact that they’re very close to Central Europe by car. Crikvenica is one of the most popular pet-friednly towns, with its famous Monty’s Dog Beach among many others, and long seafront promenade. Krk is probably the best dog-friendly island, with many beaches for dogs, and a bridge that connects it to the mainland so you don’t have to worry about ferries.
Dalmatia is just as popular, and it’s very attractive for guests who are looking to stay at a beachfront villa. The pet-friendly culture is very strong in coastal towns such as Zadar, Split, and Makarska, and you’ll find many hidden coves that are suitable for dogs, especially in the shoulder season.
What should I pack and prepare when traveling with pets to a holiday villa?
Here are some things you must pack when traveling to Croatia with your pets.

Villa Princess of Hvar
Pet passports and documentation
First things first, make sure your pet has proper documentation.
If you’re from an EU country, bring your pet passport to confirm their identity and vaccinations. If you’re traveling from outside the EU, your pet must have a recently issued animal health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination.
In fact, all pets must be microchipped first, and then vaccinated for rabies. If your puppy or kitten isn’t old enough to be vaccinated, then you’re not allowed to travel with them.
You should also keep in mind that private owners aren’t allowed to travel with more than 5 pets.
These rules apply regardless of where you stay, whether it’s a pet-friendly villa, hotel, or apartment.
What to pack for your pet
We always recommend bringing food and treats that your pet is used to, or at least make sure that you can buy them in Croatia, too. This helps you avoid stomach issues, which can be very uncomfortable for your pets and add stress to your holidays.
Also, confirm with the VIP Concierge agents whether food and water bowls are provided, or you should bring your own. The same applies to beds, blankets, or crates that your pet feels comfortable in.
Needless to say, you should also have a collar and a leash or harness, and waste bags whenever your pets go outside of the villa’s property.
How to prepare before arrival with your pets
First and most importantly, confirm that the villa is pet-friendly and that the villa managers know how many pets and of what breeds are coming with you. Inform your villa agent of this info before you book your villa to avoid any unforeseen problems.
Also, check nearby pet shops and vet clinics for peace of mind during your stay. We hope your pets won’t need to see the vet, but it’s always good to be prepared.
Finally, make sure to plan pet-friendly activities and look for the walking areas near your villa.
Practical tips for traveling with pets

Villa Frida Dubrovnik
If this is your first time traveling with your beloved pet, here are some tips that’ll help both of you.
First, make sure your dogs or pets are secured during travel. This is especially important if you’re on a long ride together. Also, make sure you make enough stops for restroom breaks.
Bringing familiar items such as their favorite toy is a great way to make this new environment more friendly and comfortable for them, and reduce their stress.
Last but not least, always respect the house rules your villa manager tells you, and follow local regulations for a smooth and nice stay.
