The most popular way is by car. Istria has excellent motorways called “Istrian Y” which take you to all parts of Istria.
You can arrive from the west if you’re coming from Slovenia or Germany. On the other hand, you can arrive from the east if you’re from Austria or Hungary. You’ll have to take the Croatian highway to Rijeka, cross the Ucka tunnel, and you’ll quickly reach Porec.
It’ll take you about 7 and a half hours to drive from Munich, 6 hours from Budapest, 4 hours from Graz, and 2 hours from Ljubljana.

Some even call it the Lim Fjord because The Vikings was filmed there, starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis.

5. What to Eat in Porec
One of the best things about Istria is its excellent gastronomy. You can take culinary tours, dine in Michelin-starred restaurants, and attend globally recognized food festivals.
In Porec, you can try dishes similar to those in other parts of Istria. They’re mostly influenced by Italian cuisine and the Mediterranean. Key ingredients are pasta, truffles, and olive oil.
Fuzi and pljukanci are the most popular types of Istrian pasta. Typically, they’re served with truffles. Istrians also like an egg-based fish fritaja that’s usually prepared from asparagus in spring or truffles in fall.
Istrian cuisine is influenced by Austro-Hungarian cuisine, too. You can see this by tasty stews like Manestra, a traditional vegetable and bean stew. If you’re visiting Istria in winter, this should definitely be on your plate.

Seafood plate - scampi stew and pasta
In summer, the most popular dishes are made from fresh seafood.
Finally, you should also taste Boskarin beef in stew or as a steak. Boskarin is Istria’s native ox.
Whatever you choose to eat, one thing is for sure: traditional Istrian meals are prepared from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, and the cuisine is very seasonal.

8. How Long to Stay in Porec
One of the most important questions of holiday planning is how many days you’ll stay in Porec.
1-Day Trip to Porec
If you’re staying somewhere else in Istria and want to go on a day trip, you’ll have just enough time to see the attractions and swim.
We recommend visiting the Old Town with the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica and a coffee break on the Riva promenade. In the afternoon, relax at the beach or even take a short boat ride to St. Nicholas Island. In the evening, have dinner in one of the local taverns and admire the stunning sunset by the sea.
3-4 Days in Porec
Another option is staying in Porec for 3-4 days, which is great if you have a long weekend you want to spend by the sea.
You’ll be able to experience the attractions in the Old Town, take a ferry to St. Nicholas Island, and go for wine tasting at a local Istrian winery. We also recommend a day trip to hilltop towns, like Motovun or Groznjan, to experience the Istrian countryside. You’ll also have time for a boat excursion along the coast and enjoy oyster tasting at the Lim Channel.
5-7 Days in Porec
This might be the best option if you want a laid-back, relaxed holiday with multiple day-trips.
Your itinerary should be similar to the one we described for a long weekend in Porec. Definitely save one full day for the boat trip or kayaking in Lim Channel, and another day for the Istrian countryside with wine and olive oil tasting.
Additionally, you’ll have time to visit another coastal town in Istria. We recommend Rovinj’s Old Town with St. Euphemia’s Church, and a stop at Bale on the way.
What’s more, you can spend your time cycling along Parenzana Trail, visiting Baredine Cave, or enjoying a spa day.
6. What Is the Best Time to Visit Porec

Porec at sunset
Porec is an interesting destination for holidaymakers from May to September, and July and August are the most popular months to visit. This is mostly due to the warm weather, sea temperatures ideal for swimming and water sports, and long days, perfect for visiting festivals, local markets, and wineries.
However, July and August are the busiest months, so if you’re looking to avoid crowds and still enjoy nice weather, we recommend May and early June, or September. You can still swim, explore Porec and the surrounding area, and the sea currents are perfect for sailing and windsurfing.
So, it all depends on what your ideal holiday looks like. If you like long beach days, sunbathing, and watersports, book your holiday for the summer months. On the other hand, if you like a laid-back atmosphere and relaxation without crowds, the shoulder season is perfect for you.
If you plan to visit festivals in Porec and its area, you should look at the events page on Porec’s official tourism portal.
