How to Make Croatian Food Soparnik

Soparnik is a traditional Croatian food from the Omis area, similar to a chard pie. Here's a recipe for Soparnik!

Soparnik is a savoury pie filled with Swiss chard from Omis Area, which used to be "Poljica Republic" in the Middle Ages. It's on the EU register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications.

Today, we bring you the recipe for this Croatian food called Soparnik. In fact, you do not need many ingredients to make it and it is suitable for vegetarians too.  

Ingredients for Soparnik

  • 500 g of all-purpose flour
  • 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 250 ml of water
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • 1 kg of chard (Blitva in Croatian)
  • 1 onion
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • A bit of salt.

Chard Mixture for Soparnik

Basically, the dish consists of two parts.

The first part is the chard mixture. First, you remove the hard parts of the chard and cut it into strips. You do not need to cook it. Also, add the green onions and a bit of parsley to the mixture. Then, salt and oil the mixture.

Afterward, you make the dough.

Mix the all-purpose flour with the water, olive oil, and salt and divide it into two parts. Then, roll them both into a round shape. Put the first piece on the baking tray, which should be dusted with flour. Then, place the chard mixture on it and cover it with the other part of the dough.

Firmly stick the ends together by twisting them.

We recommend poking Soparnik with the fork before baking to bake evenly. Finally, you put it in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius.
